Pillar 7 of the Life Domination Blueprint. New here? Start with the Blueprint overview.

Somewhere along the way, most of us traded curiosity for productivity and joy for “busy.”

As kids, play came without a reason. We explored, laughed, and created because it felt good. Then we learned that play is frivolous, something to earn after the real work is done, which it never is. So we optimized every moment and slowly stopped feeling alive.

But play is a biological need, as essential to your development as sleep and food. Dr. Stuart Brown, who founded the National Institute for Play, has spent his career showing exactly that. Play drops cortisol, releases dopamine and oxytocin, lights up your creative brain, and pulls you into flow. As George Bernard Shaw put it, you don’t stop playing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop playing.

This is the pillar that keeps you human. Adults who play are more adaptable, more resilient, and more emotionally balanced. Play resets your nervous system the way deep rest does, only faster.

Let’s reclaim it.

You Don’t Earn Joy. You Allow It.

The reframe is simple but it’s everything: stop treating fun as the payoff for productivity and start treating it as fuel for it. When everything in your life serves a goal, your nervous system never gets a break. Play is how you step out of constant doing and back into being.

Start by finding your play personality. What made you laugh as a kid? What were you doing when you lost track of time? Dr. Brown identified styles, from the Explorer to the Competitor to the Creator to the Storyteller, and naming yours helps you rediscover joy in a way that actually fits you. Adventure Days and Kevin’s Rule

You’ll never just find time for adventure. You have to make it. That’s Kevin’s Rule: plan one mini adventure every two to four months. That’s three to six a year, and 30 to 60 over a decade. Memories that define your life more than any achievement.

A mini adventure is anything that breaks your routine and reconnects you to wonder, no passport or big budget required. A new trail, a night in a town you’ve never seen, a class that you’d enjoy, a camping trip close to home. Novelty releases dopamine and norepinephrine, which is exactly why you remember vacations more vividly than workdays. The goal isn’t where you go. It’s the energy you bring: intention, uncertainty, and presence.

Creative Expression as Therapy

You don’t have to be an artist to be creative. You just have to give yourself permission to express what’s inside. Creating, whether it’s cooking, writing, building, or playing music, activates the same circuits that lower anxiety and lift dopamine and serotonin. It moves you from your head into your hands.

The only rule is zero pressure to be good. Bad art still counts. Schedule 30 minutes a week, protect the process, keep it yours unless you want to share it, and notice how you feel after. This is one of the purest forms of play, and one of the most healing.

The Three-Hobby Rule

Have three hobbies: one that keeps you creative, one that keeps you fit, and one that makes you money. The 3-Hobby Rule is a framework for balance, a reminder that play, purpose, and prosperity aren’t competing forces.

The money hobby sharpens your craft and feeds your drive: a brand, a newsletter, a skill you can sell. The fitness hobby keeps your body capable: lifting, martial arts, hiking, rucking, recreational sport. The creative hobby is soul food: music, art, photography, cooking, writing. Each engages a different part of your nervous system, and together they create wholeness, which is the real antidote to burnout. Audit which categories you’ve got covered, then add what’s missing.

The Weekly Joytivity

A joytivity is your reminder to do one thing purely for the joy of it. No metrics, no goal, no optimization. Watching a sunset without your phone. Singing badly in the car. A long conversation with someone you love. Something that makes time disappear and your inner child show up.

Aim for one a week. That’s 52 a year, more than 500 over a decade, each one resetting your mood and rebalancing your nervous system so you can show up strong everywhere else. You don’t earn joy. You allow it. And joy is contagious, so when you prioritize it, you lift everyone around you too.

How Play Powers the Rest

Play loosens up everything else. It lowers the cortisol you manage in Challenge and deepens the Connect you share with people you love. Adventure stacks naturally onto Move. Creative flow is its own form of Rest. Play keeps the whole pursuit from turning into one more grind, which is what makes it sustainable.

Play is the pillar that keeps the Blueprint joyful instead of joyless. That’s why it belongs here.

Start Here

You don’t need to overhaul your week tonight. Pick one move and run it this week:

  • Name your play personality and one thing that lights you up.

  • Schedule one 30-minute play session, guilt-free.

  • Book your next mini adventure before you forget.

  • Do one joytivity this week with your phone away.

Master one, then stack the next. Consistent, small doses of joy are what keep you alive to your own life. Not waiting for a vacation to feel it.
