Peptides have shown up everywhere lately. In podcasts, in longevity clinics, in your friend's group chat. They tend to get lumped in with steroids or dismissed as "too advanced." Both are wrong.

I've been using peptides for a while. I get asked about them constantly. This is the practical entry point: what they are, how they work, which ones I use, and how to think about getting started.

A note up front. Peptides are an accelerant. They work best on top of solid fundamentals. If your nutrition, sleep, movement, and stress management are dialed in, the right peptide can move recovery, body composition, and performance to a different level. If those foundations are missing, no peptide is going to save you.

What peptides are

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks proteins are made of. Your body already produces thousands of them naturally. They act as signaling molecules. They tell your cells what to do: heal tissue, release growth hormone, reduce inflammation, regulate sleep, support the gut lining.

The peptides we're talking about here are synthetic versions of compounds your body already uses. They're designed to mimic or amplify specific signals your biology recognizes.

A few things peptides are not:

  • Not steroids. Steroids are synthetic hormones. Peptides are signaling molecules. Different mechanisms entirely.

  • Not hormones, though some stimulate hormone production (like growth hormone).

  • Not one-size-fits-all. Different peptides target different systems.

They're specialized instructions delivered to specific cells, working alongside the systems your body already runs.

Why Peptides? The Case for Adding Them to Your Stack

If you're already doing the foundational work, peptides can compound the returns:

  • Recovery that keeps up with training. Peptides like BPC-157 and TB-500 accelerate tissue repair beyond what rest alone can do.

  • Growth hormone support without exogenous HGH. Peptides like CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin stimulate your own pituitary to release more of its own growth hormone. Better sleep, better body composition, better recovery.

  • Targeted support for specific goals. Gut health, cognitive function, fat metabolism, skin repair, sleep quality. There's a peptide for almost every system worth supporting.

  • A compounding edge over time. Better sleep and faster healing stack across months and years.

The bottom line: if you've built the foundation, peptides help you build faster on top of it.

The Peptides I Use (and Why)

I'm not going to recommend anything I haven't used myself. Here's what I’ve used in the past or am using currently:

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157)

The anchor of my stack and the one I recommend first to people just getting started.

BPC-157 is derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. It's been extensively studied for tissue repair: tendons, ligaments, muscle, and the gut lining. If you're dealing with leaky gut, chronic inflammation, nagging injuries, or stubborn soft tissue issues, this is the place to start.

What I've noticed: faster recovery between training sessions, an old nagging wrist pain fading, a general sense that my body is healing more efficiently. It's not a dramatic "hit." You just realize one day the thing that used to bother you doesn't anymore.

TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4 Fragment)

My current systemic recovery and inflammation tool. BPC-157 tends to work locally (at the site of injury or inflammation). TB-500 works more systemically, supporting cell migration, new blood vessel formation, and whole-body inflammation reduction.

If you're training hard, dealing with multiple areas of wear and tear, or just want broader recovery support, TB-500 is worth a look. Many people (myself included) run these two together.

GHK-Cu (Copper Peptide) + BPC-157 Blend

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper peptide that your body produces less of as you age. It plays a role in wound healing, collagen synthesis, skin elasticity, and tissue remodeling. Research has also shown it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

CJC-1295 (No DAC) / Ipamorelin

A growth hormone stack. Both peptides act on the pituitary to increase its own GH production and release.

  • CJC-1295 is a growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) analog. It tells your pituitary to produce more GH.

  • Ipamorelin is a ghrelin mimetic. It tells your pituitary to release the GH that's been produced.

Two pathways, one synergistic result: pulsatile, natural GH release that mimics the body's own rhythm.

What I've noticed: noticeably deeper sleep (tracked on my WHOOP), gradual body composition improvements, faster recovery. The sleep effect alone is enough to make this worth exploring.

The "No DAC" version of CJC-1295 is important. It has a shorter half-life, which means it creates a pulse of GH release rather than a sustained elevation. More consistent with the body's natural GH pulsing rhythm.

Other Peptides Worth Knowing About

My stack is focused on recovery and growth hormone support, but there are several other peptides gaining serious traction in the longevity and performance space. Here's a quick breakdown of the ones I get asked about most:

For Fat Loss & Metabolism

Tesamorelin

A GHRH analog (similar to CJC-1295) that's been specifically studied for its effects on visceral fat reduction. It has FDA approval for treating lipodystrophy-related visceral fat, and research suggests potential application for general metabolic health. If body composition is your primary goal, Tesamorelin is worth researching. Especially in combination with Ipamorelin.

MOTS-c

A mitochondrial-derived peptide that's generating a lot of interest in the metabolic health space. Research suggests it plays a role in regulating metabolism, improving insulin sensitivity, and supporting exercise performance. Think of it as a peptide that helps your mitochondria work more efficiently.

MOTS-c is one of my favorite peptides I’ve ever used. Goes great with NAD+ supplementation.

For Sleep

DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide)

Does what the name suggests. DSIP has been studied for its ability to promote deeper, more restorative sleep by influencing delta wave activity. Also known as the brainwave pattern associated with the deepest stage of sleep.

Epithalon

A synthetic version of Epithalamin, a peptide naturally produced by the pineal gland. One of the most-researched peptides in the anti-aging space. Studied for activating telomerase (the enzyme that maintains telomere length) and supporting melatonin production for sleep and circadian rhythm.

For Focus & Cognitive Performance

Semax

A synthetic peptide derived from ACTH that's been studied for its neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects. Research points to improved memory, focus, and mental clarity. It's been used clinically in Russia for decades.

Selank

Often paired with Semax, Selank is an anxiolytic peptide that's been studied for reducing anxiety and improving mood without sedation. If you want sharper cognition without the wired-and-anxious feeling that stimulants produce, the Semax/Selank combination is getting a lot of attention.

How to Choose Your First Peptide

If you're new to peptides and feeling overwhelmed by options, simplify it. Start with one peptide that matches your primary goal:

  • Faster recovery from training and injuries. Start with BPC-157.

  • Widespread inflammation and multiple nagging issues. Add TB-500 to BPC-157, or start with a BPC/TB-500 blend.

  • Better sleep, body composition, anti-aging support. CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin.

  • Reducing visceral body fat specifically. Tesamorelin, often with Ipamorelin.

  • Sharper focus, less brain fog. Semax and Selank.

What to Look for in a Peptide Source

Common Questions & Misconceptions

"Can I stack multiple peptides?"
Yes, and many people do. BPC-157 + TB-500 is one of the most popular stacks. CJC/Ipamorelin is often run alongside recovery peptides. The key is to introduce one at a time so you know what's working.

"Do I need bloodwork first?"
